Sidney captured dual championships at the Kimball Invitational Track and Field Meet held this past week. The Sidney girls won their team title by scoring 129 points with Potter/Dix runnerup with 107 and Kimball third with 101. Behind the top three came Mitchell with 75, Hemingford 54, Banner County 37, Pine Bluffs 23, and Minatare 1. In the boy’s division, Sidney ran up 163 points with Pine Bluffs runnerup with 114, and Kimball third with 77. Banner County had 74, Mitchell 56, Potter Dix 22, Hemingford 9, and Minatare 5. The original Kimball Invite was held in 2007, but had to be cancelled last year, making this the second year of its being since the new all weather track was installed. The records were many in this second year of being as there were 12 new marks established in the girl’s division and 13 in the boy’s division. Sidney, the largest school participating, showed their power, but the smaller schools also flashed their talents with Potter Dix and Banner County boasting some top talent. The meet was a twilight affair with a start time of 4 p.m. It was windy and cold before the conclusion, but at least the athletes got an opportunity to perform, and the marks were quite good considering the conditions and the lack of practice time for all schools. KIMBALL The Kimball girls got a first place finish from their 4x100 meter relay team composed of Heather Dickson, Tori Hager, Hanna Stull and Whitney Lockwood as they ran 52.3, improving on their winning time of 53.4 at the Bayard C-D meet. The Lady Longhorns have very good overall sprint speed on the team as they ran 3-4-5 in the open 100 meter dash with Dickson third in 13.07, Lockwood fourth in 13.08, and Hager fifth in 13.40. Lockwood was second in the 200 meter dash in 28.00 and Hager third in 28.30 while Hanna Stull ran fifth in 29.00. Dickson also ran second in the 400 in 1:05 and Diane Baluska fourth in 1:08.6.Megan Woods, a freshman, ran fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:56.3, and Kayli Rageth was fifth in the 1600 in 6:26.8. Coach Pahl is yet to talk one of his girls into running the 3200 meters. Kaitlin Moritz ran fourth in the 100 meter hurdles clocking 17.7. The 4x400 relay team ran third with Tori Hager, Diane Baluska, Austyn Pederson, and Megan Woods teaming to run 4:42.6, and the 4x800 relay team of Cierra Pederson, Megan Woods, Kayli Rageth, and Sadie Sullivan ran third in 11:42.10. In the field events, a strong day for Jaclyn Christensen winning the discus with a throw of 102 feet 9 inches and taking second in the shotput at 33 feet 11 inches. Heather Dickson was second in the long jump with a best leap of 16 feet 0 inches. The Lady Horns had two placers in the pole vault with Cierra Pederson fifth at 6 feet one-quarter inch, and Kelby Dickerson sixth at 6 feet 0 inches. The Kimball boys got a gold medal performance from senior Tyler Weisbrook in the shotput as he shoved the iron ball out nearly five farther than his previous best winning with a heave of 45 feet and one-half inch. He had trouble in the discus ring however and failed to place. Brad Weisbrook finished fifth in the discus at 106 feet 6 inches. Brady Land finished seventh in the high jump, just one place out of a medal, at a height of 5 feet 0 inches. Charles Ferguson ran third in the 400 meters with a time of 55.6, and Mark Mietus was second in the 800 in 2:17.4. Mietus also ran third in the 1600 in 5:35.4. Shawn Nagel ran second in the 3200 in 11:59.9 and Daniel Evertson was third in 12:08.50. Jake Daum was third in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 17.7 with Brent Bussinger sixth in 20.90. Daum also ran 3rd in the 300 hurdles in 45.3. Kimball ran third in the 4x100 relay with Jake Daum, Brady Land, Anthony Muneio, and Brad Weisbrook teaming to run 49.30. The 4x400 relay team of Charles Ferguson, Mark Mietus, Lyle Janicek, and Brady Land ran fourth in 3:52. The 4x800 relay team of Daniel Evertson, Mark Mietus, Lyle Janicek, and Shawn Nagel ran second in 9:44.7. BANNER COUNTYThe Banner County boys suffered a huge loss in the warmups when senior Jaymes Talkington injured his back on a practice jump and was unable to compete. Talkington is the area’s leading triple jumper with his leap of 45 feet three-quarter inches at the Okie Blanchard meet in Cheyenne. He is also one of the area’s best long jumpers and high jumpers as well, and runs a strong leg on the 4x400 relay. Talkington is not the only quality jumper for the Wildcats however as Brett Cross was second in the triple jump at 42 feet 1 inches, and third in the long jump at 19 feet 9 inches. Chase Wickard wound up fourth in the long jump at 19 feet 3-and-three-quarter inches. Ziven Wittler gave the Cats third place points in the shotput with his shove of 4l feet 5 inches. On the track, Tyler Gifford ran an outstanding time in winning the 3200 meter run in 10:51.2 and had enough left to run second in the 1600 in 5:00.10. Bob Olsen ran fifth in the 3200 in 12:44.5. Brett Cross showed he has some speed to go with his jumping abilities as he ran third in the 200 in 24.9, Chase Wickard is one of the top hurdlers in the region winning the 300 hurdles in 42.5 and taking second in the 110 highs in 16.8. The Cats ran third in the 4x400 relay with their time of 3:50.6.Rebekah Knaub took home the gold in the girl’s shotput with a great effort of 36 feet 4-and-three-quarter inches. Bethany Cooper was fifth in the triple jump at 29 feet 10 inches, and Brooke Wyatt was sixth in the high jump at 4 feet 6 inches. On the track, Kaylea Stoddard was fifth in the 400 meter dash in 1:09.2 and fifth in the 300 hurdles in 54.7. Laura Monsees ran third in the 1600 in 6:23.7, and Ashley Harrison ran fourth in the 3200 in 14:06.8. The Lady Wildcats are missing the services of distance runner Sarah Dvorak who is out with a shoulder injury suffered during the volleyball season. The 4x800 relay team of Rebekah Knaub, Brooke Wyatt, Laura Monsees, and Hannah Benavides ran fifth with a time of 12:17.4, and the 4x400 relay team also ran fifth in 4:50. POTTER DIX The Potter Dix girls were only 22 points back of the Sidney girls for the team championship. They have a strong corp of young athletes and can score points in almost every event. Freshman Taylor Holz put on a show for her coaches and the fans. She won the long jump at 16 feet 3 inches, won the 100 meter hurdles in 16.3, ran second in the 100 meter dash in 13.0, Brandie Hermes was another big point getter winning the high jump at 5 feet 0 inches, running fourth in the 200 in 28.9, plus running legs on two relays.
