The Kimball High Golf Team finally got to open the season and they did it in grand style. At the Mitchell Invite they shot a good 332 to finish third in a field of 11 teams trailing only Chadron with 324 and Alliance with 329 behind the top three came Potter Dix with 335, Gering 358, Garden County 358, Gordon/Rushville 358, Bridgeport 365, Mitchell 382, Bayard 406, and Sidney 414. Keldrin Krohe of Alliance was medalist with his round of 73. Kimball had two golfers in the top ten with Kendall Ferguson finishing ninth with his round of 42-39=81, and Todd O’Hare taking the number 10 spot with his round of 39-44=83, a great showing for the young freshman in his first high school competition. Michael Robinson shot 45-39=84, and Jeff Greenwood 43-41=84 to finish just one shot out of the top ten medal group, and Landon Smith was a bit back with his 46-46=92. Coach Aaron Delhay said, “I was very pleasantly surprised with the level of play of our freshmen. I was pleased with all of our scores as it was a windy and pretty lousy day. Michael (Robinson) had somewhat of an off day. He can play much better than his score showed.” Actually, Robinson and Ferguson both had trouble on one hole. The Mitchell Scenic Hills Golf Course is a nine hole course so all golfers play the same nine holes twice. Both Robinson and Ferguson took scores of 8 and 7 for 15 total on one hole. “I feel we can be a better team than last year if our freshman players continue to play like they did at Mitchell. I know Kendall and Michael will play better,” said Delhay. The Kimball team is young with Robinson the elder player as a junior, Ferguson is a sophomore and the other three are all freshmen. Potter Dix had a good showing as well finishing fourth with their 335 score. Coach Kevin Thomas is without the services of Jordan Ottoson who suffered a broken ankle playing basketball and is questionable if he will make it back this season. Lance Juelfs fired a round of 41-38=79 to finish fourth in the top ten medal group and Jeremy Gasseling was 38-42=80 for seventh place. Other Potter Dix scores were Beau Hudak 44-44=88, Ryan Brown 45-43=88, and Kaleb Thomas 44-47=91. KIMBALL WINS BRIDGEPORT TOURNEY BY 33 STROKES Coach Aaron Delhay felt as good as his Longhorns played in the opener at Mitchell, they could play better, and they proved him right as the Horns captured the team title at the Bridgeport Tournament on Monday. Considering the windy conditions that coach Delahy described as horrible, Kimball shot extremely well with an improvement of 10 strokes as they shot 322, finishing 33 strokes better than runner up Creek Valley with 355. Behind the leaders in the team scoring were Bridgeport with 359, Mitchell 367, Garden County 379, Bayard 448, Bridgeport JV 545, and Leyton with no team score. With an average of 80.5 strokes for their top four players, Kimball had all four of their top scorers finish in the top ten medal group with Kendall Ferguson taking medalist honors with his round of 39-37=76. Freshman Jeff Greenwood was third with his round of 42-38=80, Michael Robinson 40-42=82 for fourth, and Todd O’Hare was seventh with his round of 43-41=84. Landon Smith shot 51-54=105. “Once again I was really impressed overall. The wind was horrible, and to shoot the scores we shot, was very impressive. And as well as we shot, Michael, Kendall and even Todd, should have been 3 or 4 strokes better. Michael is struggling a bit so far in tournament play and I am anxious to see what he does when he plays like we know he can play. I am anxious to see just how low of a score we can shoot when we have a day when everyone plays like we know they can,” said coach Delhay. The Horns were back in action at Morrill Tuesday, and are at Scottsbluff this Monday. Tournaments at Gering and Bayard may still be made up, but new dates have not been announced at this time. The Western Trails Conference Tournament is being hosted by Kimball this year and will be held on May 2 at the Four Winds course with a 9 a.m. start time. The Kimball Invitational is set for May 7, with a 9 a.m. start time.
