Very few grandmothers get to watch their grandsons pitch for the winning team in the College World Series. Fayann Cain of Kimball enjoyed that thrill as Louisiana State University defeated University of Texas in the College World Series played last month at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha. In the final championship series, grandson Nolan Cain came on in relief and held Texas scoreless in the only game LSU lost in the best of three series.Pitcher Cain is a big, strong right handed pitcher who won five games for the Tigers in the 2009 season. He has been a reliever ever since an elbow injury in his freshman year. More than being a strong relief pitcher, he has been an example and mentor to many of the LSU ball players. They look up to him for team leadership and guidance for both baseball and school work.Ballplayer Cain graduated from LSU in an unusual off campus, out of state ceremony. The team was playing games in Mississippi when the graduation ceremony took place back in Baton Rouge, so a representative of the school awarded the diplomas to six team members in a cap and gown ceremony in a Mississippi motel. Fayann said, “I told him many times ‘You’ve got to get your degree.’”Cain got the degree in General Studies and is interested in coaching or baseball scouting. Right now he has other interests, as the Detroit Tigers are looking him over at their Lackland, Fla. facility. Grandmother Fayann Cain was born in Burns, Wyo. and got a degree in teaching at Sioux Falls College in South Dakota. She went to Kansas City upon graduation to teach first grade. Her husband Wayne attended a Baptist seminary, studying Christian Education. He worked with the YMCA in Hastings and then came to Kimball to teach. After teaching for several years, he went to work for the city.Fayann Cain taught second grade at West Elementary School and then fifth grade at Mary Lynch Elementary.Fayann has two sons. Son David is a general surgeon who practices in Pensacola, Fla and Foley, Ala. David is pitcher Nolan’s father. David grew up in Kimball and played Legion baseball under the coaching of Dale Hendrickson. David got a degree in pharmacy from the University of Wyoming and then went on to study medicine,Michael, Fayann’s younger son is a Ph.D  who lives in Corning, New York and works there in Research & Development  for Corning Glass.Fayann is an avid fan of LSU baseball in general and of grandson Nolan in particular. She watched LSU play two games in the 2008 College World Series with the Tigers being eliminated by a loss to North Carolina.  This 2009 season, she watched all six of LSU’s games on the way to the championship.Fayann said, “Watching this year’s College World Series was a great experience. The enthusiasm of the LSU fans did not diminish when Texas won Game Two of the Series.”She said,”I was there for the whole nine yards. I am so proud of him.”Fayann has several photographs of Nolan in baseball uniform. One photo shows Nolan batting with his father David crouched as catcher.Maybe soon there will be a photo of Nolan in a Detroit Tiger uniform.
