FARMERS AND FRIENDS GOLF attracted 14 two-person scramble teams this past week, not a large turnout like in years past, but twice as many as the year prior. The team of Rich Flores and Hod Boltjes took the top spot with a round of 71 while Charley Carlson and Charles Ferguson finished runnerup with 75. We are experiencing some of the best golf weather of the year right now but for some reason, when school starts, a lot of golfers put their clubs away. Don’t do this! Get out and enjoy our beautiful Four Winds Golf Course. Sorry to report that there were not enough entries for the Kimball County Manor Four Person Scramble scheduled for this past Saturday causing it to be cancelled this year. The next big tournament at the Four Winds is the Kimball Hospital Foundation tourney coming up September 12th and last year this activity attracted a large field of golfers so hopefully goflers will turn out strong once again this year. Sign up or get more info by calling the Four Winds Pro Shop at 235-4241, or talk to Kerry Ferguson about it. With Fall Sports practices underway for Nebraska High Schools, I notice on the schedule provided to me by Ken Smith, Kimball Athletic Director, that the Kimball High girl’s golf team actually has a tournament coming up in August with the Bayard tournament set for August 27. The Lady Longhorn Volleyball team opens on September 3 hosting Bridgeport, the football team opens September 4 at Morrill, and the cross country team’s first meet is September 4 at Gering. The Panhandle Seniors Ladies will be at Bridgeport Aug. 24.MICHAEL ABRAMSON, Kimball High grad, who is headed to Hastings College this fall as a member of the Hastings Men’s Golf Team, played in the Adams County Open Golf Tournament in Hastings this past weekend. He was in the championship flight and shot rounds of 85-79. On August 26-27 he will playoff for a varsity spot on the college team. He is headed to Hastings on the 25th and start classes on August 31st. SHAWN NAGEL didn’t have much time to play golf this summer as he kept busy with his wrestling. The Kimball High senior attended two week long wrestling camps in Ohio where he wrestled in excess of 120 matches going up against the best wrestlers from allover the United States. “I didn’t win them all” said Nagel, but he certainly won the large majority of his matches. Shawn said he wrestled kids in his weight class (120 pounds) and also heavier weights. Shawn also went to a camp in Estes Park, Colorado but sprained a knee and didn’t complete that camp. He actually had to layoff for a couple of weeks. He also wrestled on a near weekly basis at open gym nights in Scottsbluff and Mitchell. With his summer agenda of wrestling, he easily surpassed all of the high school matches he has been involved with. Shawn will continue to work out with his weight lifting and conditioning to ready himself for his final year of high school wrestling, but he also will join his cross country team- mates to help the Kimball High Longhorns capture honors this fall, then he will be out to defend his State Wrestling Championship of last year.
