The Kimball High football team got their season underway Friday night at Morrill coming out on top 46-13 over the hosting Lions and looked good on both sides of the ball in securing the victory. Coach Gene Mohr is using a lot of young players in starting roles and he got some outstanding play from his seniors and his young players. Sophomore Jeff Greenwood is one of those underclassmen who played big in the season opener and got the Horns on the score board early with his interception and a 13 yard return for a touchdown with 9:01 showing on the clock first quarter. The point after kick was no good, but Kimball had struck first and they would continue to roll to a 34-0 first half lead. The Kimball defense was ferocious all night but especially early as they broke through time after time to throw Morrill for losses. Greenwood came up with another big play shortly after his intercept with a pass reception from quarterback Kendall Ferguson that went for 39 yards before he was pulled down at the Morrill 3 yard line. Ferguson took it in on a sneak on the next play and senior fullback Trevor Petersen burst up the middle for the two point conversion to put Kimball up l4-0. The Horns would score one more time in the first period with Jake Daum getting most of the yards on the 66-yard drive. The junior I-back, who accounted for 189 yards of rushing on 16 carries, had a 38 yard run and a first down at the Morrill 17. Petersen ran for 4 and Daum took it in from 13 yards out off a pitch from Ferguson to the left side. The PAT failed and the score board showed Kimball on top 20-0 at the end of the opening period. In the second quarter the Kimball defense continued to play tough forcing a Morrill punt that Kimball let roll dead at the midfield stripe. Following a delay of game penalty, the Horns got a 15-yard pass completion from Fergie to Michael Robinson and a first down. Petersen broke for an 18 yard gain and another first down, then it was Daum on the next three carries going 5, 13 and 2 yards for the TD with 9:08 showing on the clock. Ferguson took it in himself for the two point conversion and a 28-0 lead. On their next possession, Morrill could not generate any productive offense and got off a short punt giving Kimball the football at the Lion 36. The Horns went to the air again for the next score with Ferguson connecting with sophomore Dalton Lockwood for a 20 yard touchdown. Once again the PAT kick failed and it was 34-0, the half time score after sophomore Trevan Hinton came up with a big interception at the Kimball 14 yard line. Kimball received the second half kickoff with Daum getting a 20 yard return to the Kimball 42. Daum ran for 15, then caught a 13 yard pass from Ferguson, ran for 9 more, Petersen carried for 4, and then Daum took it to the house on a 15 yard run where he reversed his field and dazzled the fans with some great moves enroute to the goal line to run the score to 40-0 with 9:55 left in the third quarter. Morrill got on the score board next after quarterback James Burford broke for a big run and then connected with Taylor Lackey on an 11 yard scoring pass. Cody Burkey kicked the PAT with 5:12 left in the period. Sophomore Todd O’Hare had a nice return on the ensuing kickoff with the Horns starting from scrimmage at their own 31. Daum scored Kimball’s final touchdown on a 45 yard run and the PAT kick failed as time expired in the third period with Kimball leading 46-7. Coach Mohr had been using a lot of bench throughout but he pretty much turned it over to the reserves for the balance of the game. O’Hare and Alan Muneio had some nice runs in the final quarter and Lockwood did a good job at quarterback in replacement of Ferguson. Morrill scored with 2:48 left in the contest with speedy Skyler Manville going in from 6 yards out. The final stat sheet showed Ferguson going 5 for 10 passing for 97 yards with no interceptions and 1 touchdown. Kimball rushed for 256 yards on 32 attempts. The Horns had 17 first downs, 8 penalties for 50 yards, lost 1 of 4 fumbles, and punted twice for an average of 42 yards. Daum had 2 catches for 23 yards and rushed 16 times for 189 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. Petersen had 6 carries for 28 yards, O’Hare 6 for 28 yards, and Muneio 2 for 14. Greenwood had a catch for 39 ~yrds, Loqciwood 1 for 20 and a TD, and Robinson 1 for 15 yards. Morrill had 8 first downs, 2 fumbles, 2 penalties for 20 yards, rushed 45 times for 167 yards, were 1 of 5 passing for 11 yards, had 178 total yards and punted 3 times. Petersen put on a tackling clinic to lead the Kimball defensive stats. He had 8 unassisted tackles and 3 assists with 3 tackles for minus 12 yards. Daum was in on 8 tackles, Muneio 6, Ferguson 5 with 4 solo stops and 3 for loss of yardage of 15 yards. Hinton had the interception and 4 tackles including 2 solos, Robinson was in on 4 stops, O’Hare 5, and Zak Marosi 3. Tyson Culek had 4 tackles with 3 solo stops for 5.5 yards loss. “I thought we executed well on both sides of the ball. We used our run game more than I planned but the score and the way the game was going dictated that,” coach Mohr said, “Our passing game was good.”“Our line play got better as the game went along and all of our offensive linemen played well,” Mohr said, “We went behind Henry (Ferguson) on a couple of key plays down at the goal line and it worked well. I thought Trevor (Petersen) had an outstanding game on defense and really lead-blocked to break Jake (Daum) loose.” “Jake ran as well as anyone I have had here at Kimball since A.J. Belgum had his big night against Mitchell a few years back,” Mohr said. When asked about the PAT problems, Mohr said, “We look a lot sharper in practice than we did at Morrill but we will work a little harder on that phase of the game this week and we will get it corrected.” The only injury in the Morrill game was a rolled ankle by sophomore Preston Lukassen but Mohr said he is O.K. and will be ready this week. The Horns are on the road again this Friday travelling to Bridgeport to face a team that lost their opener to Mitchell 41-6, but Mohr said Bridgeport made Mitchell work for their scores. “We will have to play well again, and I think we will, if we want to win at Bridgeport,” Mohr said.
