The Kimball Board of Education met on Oct. 12 and selected the bid of A-Lert roofing to install a new metal roof on Mary Lynch Elementary School. Total cost will be $43,370. Two other companies submitted bids. A-Lert’s combination of roof slope, roof life and warranty period were significant parts of their winning bid. The new roof will be made of 24 gauge steel, have a 1/12 pitch and a 20 year warranty. Start date should be in the range of Dec. 1, 2009.A-Alert is one of the nation’s larger metal roofing companies and installs over a million square feet of roof each year.The board took up a recommendation from the facilities committee to name the school athletic field after long time and successful football coach Keith Staehr. Staehr has recently been named to the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame.Considerable discussion then revolved around this question. Is selection to a hall of fame the necessary criteria for naming a school facility?Board Member Steve Die-moz moved and Lynn Vogel seconded the motion that the school athletic field be named after Keith Staehr. Diemoz said Staehr always got 110 percent effort from his players and he supported the kids. Diemoz said many players lives were positively affected by Staehr.The motion to name the field after Staehr then passed unanimously. An appropriate sign will be acquired in time for the field to be dedicated at the homecoming football game next fall. In other actions, the board approved the resignation of Myra Wickham, effective at the end of  the school term. Wickham had previously been approved for early retirement incentive pay.The board also approved early retirement incentive pay for Don McCombs, Carol Beach and Don Beach. Their resignations, effective at the end of the school year,  were also approved.A decision not to lock-in to a gas price contract at this time was made, based on administration conversations with County Commissioner Larry Brower. Brower is  reported to have said market price has been the most favorable pricing, in his experience.Superintendent Unzicker announced that Kimball School District would receive $95,046 in Federal Stimulus Funds. The funding will be used to purchase 89 new computers, computer software and software licenses.Unzicker said an agreement had been reached with the Historical Society so that the school district would soon be removing all school equipment now stored in the old high school building. He said the School District had no further need for either storage in the old high school or for the old football field.The next School Board meeting will be November 9.
