Historically, Kimball has an average snowfall of 2.1 inches in the month of October, according to data from the High Planes Regional Climate Center. But with the recent snowstorm, the area has definitely gone over the average.Beginning on Tuesday night with rain and into Wednesday morning with snow, the storm kicked off with a 3.5 inch dowsing of snow. Travel was treacherous but was manageable with care and attention. On Thursday the snow continued adding another 5 inches of heavy, wet snow. Many residents found their vehicles sufficiently snowed in and were forced to shovel the drive way before heading out to work. On Friday Old Man Winter gifted Kimball with another 4 inches of snow. Added to that was heavy winds causing major drifts. Some drifts measured in at 3-feet deep. Traffic was to be limited to necessary travel only on Friday as crews worked to clear the streets.Interstate 80 was closed by the Nebraska Department of roads and reopened at 5 p.m. on Friday. Many residents found themselves once again shoveling the driveway. And again the snow was very wet and heavy.By Saturday the weather had warmed considerably and much of the snow was melted. Children hit the streets in their Halloween costumes in search of their treats while parents looked on. Come Sunday the snow was mostly gone and now, on Tuesday there remains only traces. Unless you drive south on Highway 71 were the drifts are still deep. This winter has been labeled an El Nino year. This means that it is very possible that more snow and interesting weather is in en route to the Panhandle.Kimball has a recorded average snowfall of 40.9 inches for the year. So far this year, we have received 20.5 inches of snow, according to measurements taken at the Kimball Water Treatment plant. Being half way to our average, and plenty of winter left, it might be time to make sure the snow blower has plenty of fuel.
