With a dozen or so out-of-town roofing contractors in town, these tips from the Nebraska Attorney General’s office may be helpful.

Deal with reputable people in your community.

Check references.

Get a written estimate that includes any oral promises by the contractor.

Don’t pay more than the minimum in advance. Ask questions first and pay later.

Watch what is charged in your name at building supply stores.

Ask to see their general liability and worker’s compensation insurance.

The Colorado Attorney General’s office suggests getting a written contract that spells out when the work will be started, type and quality of materials and when the work will be completed. Insist on making partial payments as specific work is completed.

The National Association of Home Builders gives some signs that a contractor could be trying to take advantage of you.

These signs include:

You are told that on this job, a contract “won’t be necessary.”

You are asked to pay for the entire job up front, or in cash.

The contractor won’t give a reference - or the reference can’t be found.

You can’t verify the contractor’s business address.

You have been chosen as a “demonstration project at a special price.”

Some of the out-of-town contractors have taken the trouble to make themselves known to the Kimball Banner County Chamber of Commerce. Call the Chamber 308.235.3782 to get names of those firms.

The Latin words caveat  emptor  come down from antiquity ...let the buyer beware.
