After taking a week off, High Plains Pro Rodeo kicked off their third event of the season on Saturday. Rain did threaten the event, but rodeo fortune won out and the skies cleared.

The rodeo that night was dedicated to Albin, Wyo. resident Tim Malm. Malm was injured while practicing his rodeo event at his parents ranch. At the time of the rodeo, Malm was breathing on his own again but reports still had him listed as being in a medically induced coma. A portion of High Plains Pro Rodeo merchandise sales, as well as a portion of the gate, went to the Malm family.

Also, during the 50/50 raffle, winner Jim Merryfield opted to donate his share of the money back to the Malm family. The other half of the money went to the Malms as well.

In the main event, fans and riders alike experienced a heart stopping moment as a CBR rider Josh Johnson was thrown from his bull and lay motionless on the ground. After pickup men John Robert Faden and Josh Staufer roped the bull, Kimball County Ambulance crew were able to come in and care for the fallen rider.

Johnson was soon on his feet and walking out of the arena. He was escorted out with a hearty ovation from the audience. He was checked out behind the pens to make sure he was truly ok.

Stock contractor Brad Vogel’s bulls got the best of the CBR riders as only two out of 25 riders were able to hold on for the required eight seconds.

Taking home the top prize was Ardie Maier. Maier currently sits 15 in the CBR standings. Maier scored his winning ride, 88 points, in the eight man short round.

Sam Wilson took home second place. Wilson scored his winning ride, 78 points, during the long round. He was unable to hold on to beat Maier in the short round.

In the Wyoming Rodeo Association sanctioned open rodeo, AJ Franzen and Stuart Hoar took first in team roping. They got their ropes on the steer in 7.44 seconds.

They were closely followed by Casey Adams and Riley Pedro, 7.61; and by Shane Piero and Stuart Hoar, 7.67.

In Mixed Team Roping Lexi and Britt Bath took home the purse with a time of 10.79. They were followed by Reata Hoar and Stuart Hoar, 16.09; and Samantha Hoar and AJ Franzen, 17.19.

Lexi Bath was victorious in the breakaway roping as she roped her calf in a quick 5.21. Tawny Talkington took second with a time of 7.57.

Tie Down Roping saw Augustus Cross winning in 10.93. Britt Bath placed second with a time of 22.38.

Cross came out on top in Steer Wrestling as well. He was able get his steer down in 8.99.

Eleven hundreds of a  second separated first and second place in the Barrel Racing as Brandie Halls won out with a time of 18.46. Carly Snell was hot on her heals with a time of 18.57. Deb Bedee was less than a hair’s breath away from second as she took third with a time of 18.59.

The rough stock came out victorious this weekend as no riders were able to hold on in either bareback or saddle bronc.

This was the third in a nine series rodeo. These rodeos are held on most Saturdays throughout the summer at the Kimball County Fairgrounds. The next event is scheduled for this Saturday. Open rodeo begins at 5 p.m. with the CBR main event kicking off at 7 p.m. Rough stock events follow CBR.
