Applications from four well-qualified individuals will be under review for the police chief position vacated by Doug Provance, said Mayor James Schnell at the regular city council meeting, Wednesday, Jan. 5.

Once the applications have been reviewed, the applicants will be interviewed, and background checks ran. The council will choose a replacement and begin training by Jan. 14, which is the last day Provance will be available to the city, Schnell said.

One and six year plans for the streets of Kimball were discussed with the council. Jim Ryschon, street superintendent, reported that in the next year the city has plans for regular maintenance. City street crews will also work on County Road 43 for the rail spur development.

Most of the work will be done by the city street department employees, however, some will be contracted out. Armor coating is one such process planned for the coming year. Ryschon explained that the city does not have the equipment available to do that work themselves.

Kimball contracts armoring coating services in conjunction with other panhandle cities to save money. Schnell, expecting an increase in gas and oil prices, asked Ryschon if the price for the labor can be locked in now.

Assuring the council that everything possible has been done to save money, but locking in a price this early is not possible.

Being unable to attend the scheduled council meeting on Jan. 19, Schnell asked Council President, Scott Haun, to preside over the meeting on that date.

Schnell had considered postponing the meeting until the following week, but due to the discussion items slated for that agenda, the attorney must be present.

With nothing further to discuss, the board adjourned.
