A few hours before sunset Sunday night, Shawn Mannon hovered over a table loaded with fireworks. Around him, friends and family lounged under open tents set up in the backyard.

“We’re trying to compete with the city” he joked while fussing with fuses.

The city's fireworks display put an exclamation mark on a weekend of cook-offs, pool games, antique tractor pulls and impromptu celebrations.
