It is unlawful to discharge a firearm within city limits except by an officer of the law while on duty.

Most of the citizenship knows this to be true, however, City Attorney Kent Hadenfeldt pointed out to the city council that this includes air guns, BB guns and even slingshots.

Hadenfeldt brought this to the council's attention due to a request from the National Wild Turkey Federation to have a BB gun and archery trailer on Farmer's Day at the corner of Chestnut and Second streets.

In order to approve the activity, the council would need to amend the current ordinance in much the same way they amended one regarding animals at large for the fair.

According to City Clerk Pam Richter, the council was faced with an amendment to section 6-201 of the Kimball Municipal Codes, regarding animals running at large at the same regular council meeting Wednesday, July 20.

Due to a request by Doug Lukassen to run mares and colts through city streets as part of the fair activities.

Council amended the animals at large ordinance to include language making it lawful to do so during special occasions and with prior council approval.

The Kimball County Ag Society will be allowed to run the 13-16 mares and colts through town prior to the rodeo at about noon on August 12, 2011.

The running of the mares will begin at Wolf Automotive according to the request Lukassen made to council. The mares will take a direct route down Second Street to Nadine, up to Sixth Street and then to the south side of the fair grounds.

As to how the council learned of the ordinances, Richter said, “It is nice to have our attorney research these things for us, so we don't overlook ordinances.”
