The Kimball City Council directed city staff to trim its draft budget for fiscal year 2011-2012 during its budget workshop held in the city council chamber room Wednesday, August 24.

The initial draft budget is short $40,661 from meeting the maximum $.50 mill levy per $100 of valuation allowed under Nebraska state statutes, and $81,354 over the city council's request of using the same mill levy as last year which was $.47 per $100 of valuation. The total property tax the city requested is $600,307. The maximum the city is allowed to take in from property taxes is $559,646.

The city lost from last year $44,225 from Nebraska state aid and municipal equalization. Under state law, municipalities can increase revenue by 3.5 percent annually. The Kimball Airport Authority will be operating with a $32,000 property tax request in the new fiscal year. Meanwhile, the city property valuation increased 6.1 percent. For a $100,000 piece of property, residents of Kimball will have to pay $680.42 tax. Last year, the tax was $624.17.

During the Kimball joint City / County Park & Recreation Executive Board meeting held prior to Wednesday's budget workshop, a 4-3 vote, failed to cut $10,000 from the $80,500 budget it will receive for fiscal year 2011-2012.

There will be another budget workshop Wednesday, August 31 at 6 p.m. in the city council chamber room where city staff “will try to present a budget that meets the city council's requirements,” City Administrator Harold Farrar said.

A budget hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, September14 at 6 p.m. in the city council chamber room. The final budget must be submitted to the state auditor by September 20.
