The 2011 football season may seem like a distant memory. But when organizers of the West Nebraska All-Star Football Game sent letters to schools this side of Ogallala and Gordon-Rushville, three Longhorns came immediately to the minds of area coaches.

Andrew Barrett, Jeff Greenwood and Brent Bussinger have been selected to play in the June contest. Kimball head coach Chauncey Pedersen will work the sidelines. And Dalton Lockwood may earn a spot as an alternate.

“I was surprised,” said Greenwood of the honor. “We’ll be playing with guys we’ve only played against--it will be fun.”

The game pits the Panhandle’s best against graduating stars from the state’s central reaches. Selecting coaches pore over nomination letters, watch film and cull through their own memories when making selections. Schools are limited to three participants, with rosters set at 32 per side.

“This is a lifetime opportunity for any senior,” Bussinger explained. “I’m excited.

The Kimball standout has another reason to look forward to the contest. His father, Rod Bussinger, took part in the 1982 game along with Pedersen and Mitch Daum, earning defensive player of the game honors.

“It’s one last chance to put the uniform on for many guys,” Pedersen observed--although Barrett has been invited to walk on at the University of Wyoming this fall.

Greenwood plans to attend Wayne State and play golf. Bussinger earned a prestigious RHOP scholarship to Chadron State.

“I’m going to be out of shape, I know that,” Greenwood said with a laugh.

The players participate in a mini-camp before the game, which is played in Scottsbluff. Rules for the event limit defensive packages, forbid blitzes and try to cut down on potential injuries. But most arrive in good condition after spring sports.

“I’m doing track and working on the farm,” Barrett said. “I’ll be ready.”

The three have worked together on football fields since the 5th grade. When they look back at their senior season, they remember the sense of togetherness--off and especially on the gridiron.

“Our teamwork was the best it has ever been,” Barrett pointed out. “We really clicked.”

All three mentioned Lockwood as a teammate they believe worthy of a spot on the all-star roster. The quick running back suffered through several injuries, finishing out the season with a cast on one arm.

“He was out for awhile,” Pedersen explained. “But he’s a player definitely worthy of it.”
